What is the big deal about eating local food?

Our annual local Food Challenge, a week of "upping your local food game," starts September 21st! Below, to refresh our collective will and understanding, you will find all the reasons we can think of to source food locally, and some ways to make, and share the fun, so read on to participate in the Food Challenge, honor your local food producers, and make a difference in our future:

  • Take part in the (ultimate) challenge of eating only foods grown or raised on Aquidneck Island or caught in the waters of Narragansett Bay,

  • Cook one "all-local" meal each day, or

  • Add one local ingredient to each meal of the week.

The Food Challenge is an opportunity to learn about foods produced on and around Aquidneck Island and what we need to support a thriving, sustainable local food system for all.

Over the coming months, we will be highlighting favorite local food heroes on our social media pages, sharing recipes, and writing about you! If you have a local food hero, a motivation for purchasing locally, or a favorite recipe using fresh Rhode Island ingredients, be sure to tag #aquidneckfoodchallenge and we will share your contributions on our pages to inspire others.
