Our school and community gardens have been improved, prepared, and planted thanks to your ongoing contributions to ACT. We were able to purchase compost to add nutrients to the soil, make improvements to raised bed gardens, and plant an assortment of seedlings in our five garden sites in the North End of Newport. As warm days increase, the gardens are beginning to flourish which we plan to show off in public tours later this season to showcase what is made possible when a community works together to increase access to healthy foods by growing it themselves!
We send a special thank you to teams from Embrace Home Loans and the RI TerraCorpsprogram for lending their hands in the newly established (and gorgeous) pollinator garden and food forest at Island Community Farm in Middletown, where our micro-farm partners, at Hawk and Handsaw have spearheaded the cultivation of these gardens.
As a recipient of Aquidneck Land Trust's Merritt Neighborhood Fund, we now look forward to making improvements (educational signage and new plantings!) to our food forest at Island Community Farm this fall.
