401 Gives Day is Friday, April 1st!
Mark your calendars for April 1st, 401 Gives Day - a day to celebrate all the good going on in our community. Your donation to ACT's campaign will help us fund our 2022 Root Riders Program!
The Root Riders Ride Again
In the Root Riders Program, students will care for community gardens in Newport's North End while developing communication skills, acquiring horticultural knowledge, practicing safe biking in a group, and serving their community by sharing fresh produce. Traveling from garden to garden by bicycle, students will learn to harvest and sell produce at the nearby Miantonomi Community Market. (ACT is thrilled to reopen this lively farmers market, in partnership with the Newport Health Equity Zone, after a two-year hiatus due to covid. We hope you'll join us in Miantonomi Park on Monday afternoons, 2-6PM in July and August.)
Students, ages 14-17, are encouraged to apply to be a part of this six-week summer job program. Guided by two mentors, students will work Monday through Thursday for 20 hours per week at a rate of $15 per hour. The job program runs July 6th through August 18th.
Summer Bounty: The Best Foodie Party in Town
If you were lucky enough to attend our first Summer Bounty party in 2019 you will remember what a great event it was: samples of delicious foods and beverages from more than 25 local food producers, live music, a beautiful summer evening in a lovely location, and best of all, the company of friends who share a commitment to changing the food landscape.
After longing for those kinds of connections in the past two years of isolation, we can finally gather again, this year partnering with our friends, supporters and winter market hosts, Stoneacre Garden.
Purchase tickets or take advantage of the many opportunities to support the event by becoming a sponsor, taking an ad in the event program, or donating an item for one of the fabulous raffle prizes.
Thank you, Isabel!
Isabel Marsh joined ACT, first as a volunteer and later as a board member, helping us through the challenging constraints imposed by COVID when farmers markets were so difficult to manage becasue of distancing and masks. Isabel brought her great people skills and cheerful disposition to brighten those difficult days, for which our market staff is eternally thankful.
Isabel has just completed a term of service as an ACT board member, sharing her significant expertise in marketing to improve our communications and marketing plan. Isabel is now fully occupied as a staff member at the Newport County Chamber of Commerce and so we send a huge shout-out of appreciation for her many, many contributions to this organization. We miss you already Isabel!
