Aquidneck Community Table works in many ways to build a vibrant food system on Aquidneck Island: distribution of fresh foods at our farmers markets, education in school and community gardens, programs that inspire young people to love nutritious foods.

Empowering youth to grow, harvest, and sell

In 2021, we launched a youth employment program: The Root Riders. Nine high school students, from each of the three Aquidneck Island towns, came together to care for school and community gardens in the North End of Newport. The group quickly bonded as they learned to weed, water, and harvest in the six ACT gardens, using bikes as their mode of transportation and selling their produce at their own farm stand at the farmers market.
