Healthy Soils, Healthy Seas Rhode Island - Stakeholder Meeting #2

  • Salve Regina University 36 Ochre Point Avenue Newport, RI, 02840 United States (map)

Moving from a pilot composting project to 100% island wide composting...

The overarching goal of the Healthy Soils, Healthy Seas Rhode Island (HSHSRI) Project is to protect ocean health, by establishing a multi-year integrated materials management solution with an initial pilot program focused on business and residential composting on Aquidneck Island, Rhode Island, that inspires behavior change and results in the reduction and elimination of litter that becomes marine debris. This brings together existing composting efforts into a pilot program that aims to demonstrate the effectiveness, efficiency, and strategic benefit of diverting food waste from the landfill. By bringing together business composting, curbside composting, market drop off composting, and backyard composting, a reduction will occur in less food waste collected, transported, and sent to the landfill. This creates a financial incentive for residents, businesses and local governments to explore the long-term value proposition of island wide composting efforts.
